Another GCA 953 SLD Director working hard to help railroaders in his state.
Below is a letter from Washington SLD Herb Krohn.
Dear Brothers and Sisters:
Tuesday morning, without any debate, the Washington State Senate Labor & Commerce Committee passed SB 5267 – the Safe UNPAID Leave Act for Washington Railroad Workers by a vote of 5 yea’s, 2 nay’s, and 2 without recommendation. This bill is now in the Senate Rules Committee, we are working to get this bill pulled onto the Senate Floor Calendar quickly.
This morning, the Washington State House of Representatives Labor & Workplace Standards passed HB 1548 – the Safe UNPAID Leave Act for Washington Railroad Workers by a vote of 6 yea’s, 0 nay’s, and 3 without recommendation. The House bill will likely be referred to a Fiscal Committee for review before being sent to the Rules Committee as the rules of the House have a lower fiscal cost threshold for requiring financial review of bills.
The plan is to advance the Senate Bill across the floor and to the House of Representatives, however, we want to ensure the House Bill is ready & on deck to move forward in the event any problems develop with the bill in the State Senate.
We will be sending out messages soon asking members living in districts with Senators who are on the Senate Rules Committee, to contact their Senators to urge them to pull SB 5267 to the floor calendar.
The blatant and outrageous falsehoods from rail carrier officials have worked against them, there seems to be a greater sense of momentum in both the Senate and the House to move this legislation forward. However, we can never underestimate the underhanded actions of the carriers given their unlimited resources and influence!
