Earlier today the U.S. Senate passed H.R 1 (known as One Big Beautiful Bill Act) by a vote of 51-50 (Vice President Vance was the tie-breaking vote, acting as President of the Senate).
The final bill did not include Senator Cantwell's Amendment #2613 (642 amendments were submitted, of which only 43 had debate, most which were rejected) which would have included overtime tax exemption for railroad and aviation workers. The current bill provides an overtime tax exemption for workers covered under the Fair Labor Standards Act, not the Railway Labor Act.
SMART-TD members sent over 4,300 messages to U.S. Senators. This is a lot of messages sent in less than 24-hours. My thanks to everyone who contacted their two U.S. Senators. Moving forward, we will look at other options to provide tax fairness to railroad workers. Stay tuned for additional information.
