Please find attached the recently completed report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine regarding the effects of long freight trains. In 2021, Congress directed the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) "to conduct a study on the operation of freight trains that are longer than 7,500 feet."
The attached report was issued yesterday by the Committee. It's worth noting that SMART-TD was instrumental in getting Commerce Rail Safety Specialist, Dennis Mogan, appointed to the committee during its formation. Rail labor also provided valuable information to the committee, including our very own Alternate National Legislative Director, Jared Cassity.
