Safety

Always the crews fault.

I have recently observed at Global 3 that management is increasingly convinced that crews are the reason for any of their issues(whatever those may be). To combat this several measures have been implemented.

  1. Dressed and ready at on duty time

  2. Out the door within 10 minutes

  3. Yard jobs moving within 30 minutes of on duty time

  4. New on site gas pump/no longer allowed to leave property.

  5. 30 minutes before end of shift contact manager to ensure no other task needs to be completed.

These aren’t outlandish requests by management. What is really upsetting is that so many crews have cut corners for the carrier it is simply thought to be the norm.

Crews helping managers make decisions to be more efficient.

Air test that should take 1-2 hours are taking 15 minutes.

Rules are being broken to save time(reaching over knuckles, not stretching joints, crossing through equipment like autos, RCO not ramping up and down properly). These are just the rules I find MYSELF still breaking.

What will you get for cutting corners? Written up.

I have seen managers make decisions that force the yard into a stand still for 3 hours, but if a crew isn’t moving fast enough or taking to long then it’s a big issue.

To any who is out there cutting corners to help out, I was exactly the same for 14 years and still have bad habits. I still work hard but try my best to follow the rules at the same time.

It’s not my railroad, not my yard, not my cars; but it is my job. Rule 1.1-Safety is the most important element in performing duties. Obeying the rules is essential to job safety and continued employment.

Well said!!!! Every rule goes unlooked when it benefits the carriers but at the end of the day it’s always your decision on safety for yourself and others… I’m glad someone finally said it!!!
